Assistant Professor in Didactics of Geography (W1) with tenure track option (to W2)

The School of Cultural and Social Sciences, Institute of Geography at Osnabrück University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (m/f/d) in Didactics of Geography at the earliest possible date:

Assistant Professor in Didactics of Geography (W1) with tenure track option (to W2)

This tenure-track professorship is funded by the German Federal Government and the Länder under its Program for the Promotion of Young Scientists (Tenure-Track Program).

Upon meeting the general administrative requirements, you will be employed as a civil servant on limited tenure for an initial period of three years. If you receive a positive evaluation after the initial three years, this period can be extended by up to three further years.

If you meet Osnabrück University’s standards with respect to ability, competence and academic achievement, you will be offered a tenured W2 Professorship in accordance with the relevant legal provisions without further application.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The professorship is to conduct research at the Institute of Geography (IfG) in the field of geography didactics with reference to the focus profiles of the IfG "Human-Environment Interaction" and/or "Migration and Globalisation". In teaching, the professorship is to be involved in particular in the courses of study leading to the teaching profession (2-subject Bachelor's and Master's teaching profession at grammar schools) of the Geography teaching unit. All courses are offered in German. Participation in academic self-administration, commitment to the further development of teacher training at the University of Osnabrück, and active networking with schools are expected.

Conditions of Employment:

A doctorate of outstanding quality in the field of geography didactics, very good knowledge of the German school system, experience in research related to at least one of the focus profiles of the IfG "Human-Environment Interaction" and/or "Migration and Globalisation" are required. Furthermore, very good German language skills are required.

Ideally, the future holder of the position will have experience in the acquisition of external funding. Furthermore, teaching experience in geography didactics and experience in university self-administration are wished for.

Legal Conditions of Employment:

You will hold a first degree, have a strong commitment to teaching, and have demonstrated your ability to engage independently in advanced academic research, as a rule by obtaining an outstanding PhD (in accordance with Section 30 subsection 2 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act [NHG]) in a relevant subject.

In addition, you will have a minimum of three years of school-teaching or relevant teaching experience or have a background in a relevant field of empirical research commensurate with the duties required in this position.

If you have been employed as a research fellow or a graduate assistant prior to or after acquiring your PhD, then the combined duration of your PhD studies and your employment should not exceed six years (Section 30 subsection 5 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act [NHG]).

Assistant professorships were introduced in order to lower the average age of scholars receiving their first appointment to a professorship, thereby providing them with employment security as they start their career. The position is available on a full-time or part-time basis.
