Assistant Professor in the History of Christianity and the Church (W1) with tenure track option to (W2)

The Institute of Catholic Theology at Osnabrück University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (m/f/d) in the History of Christianity and the Church at the earliest possible date.
This tenure-track Professorship is funded by the German Federal Government and the Länder under its Program for the Promotion of Young Academics (Tenure-Track Program).
Upon meeting the general administrative requirements, you will be employed as a civil servant on limited tenure for an initial period of three years. If you receive a positive evaluation after the initial three years, this period can be extended by up to three further years.
If you meet Osnabrück University’s standards with respect to ability, competence and academic achievement, you will be offered a tenured W2 Professorship in accordance with the relevant legal provisions without further application.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

You will cover the full breadth of church history in your research and teaching. You will place particular emphasis on the culturally formative power of Christianity and the diverse expressions of Christianity in the European and global context. You will contribute to existing profile lines and research networks at the university (Institute for the Cultural History of the Early Modern Period, the Christian-Jewish Research Centre, new PhD research groups, etc.), and work actively to broaden interdisciplinary networks especially by furthering contacts with the Institutes for Protestant and Islamic Theology. You will develop the teaching program for students of education at the Institute of Catholic Theology by proposing new concepts for teaching ecclesiastical history. You will also be responsible for ensuring that your subject is clearly and visibly integrated into the international profile of Osnabrück University. Some of the teaching duties need to be provided at the Institute for Catholic Theology of the University of Vechta.

Conditions of Employment:

You must possess an outstanding doctorate in church history and have a publication record encompassing subjects beyond your dissertation topic. You must have a clearly defined research project with a research focus outside your dissertation topic, and an aptitude for university teaching. Your publications should exhibit a cultural studies profile and demonstrate an interest in methodological innovations. You should also have experience in teaching, in raising external funding and in academic self-government.

Legal Conditions of Employment:

You will hold a first degree, have a strong commitment to teaching, and have demonstrated your ability to engage independently in advanced academic research, as a rule by obtaining an outstanding PhD (in accordance with Section 30 subsection 2 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act [NHG]). If you have been employed as a research fellow or a graduate assistant prior to or after acquiring your PhD, then the combined duration of your PhD studies and your employment should not exceed six years (Section 30 subsection 5 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act [NHG]).

Assistant professorships were introduced in order to lower the average age of scholars receiving their first appointment to a professorship, thereby providing them with employment security as they start their career. Applications are therefore particularly welcome from scholars in the early stages of their career.

The position is available on a full-time or part-time basis. Osnabrück University is a family-friendly university and is committed to helping working/studying parents balance their family and working lives. Osnabrück University is actively seeking to increase the number of female Professors in its employ. Applications from women are therefore particularly welcome. If two candidates are equally qualified, preference will be given to the candidate with disability status.

Please submit your application with the usual supporting documentation (including a resume with full details of your scholarly and/or scientific employment history, list of publications and courses taught as well as planned research) in electronic form (as one PDF file) together with the “Bewerbungsprofil” [“Applicant Profile”] form available on the university homepage (www.uni-osnabrueck.de/universitaet/stellenangebote) to Prof. Dr. Georg Steins, Director of the Institute of Catholic Theology, School of Educational and Cultural Studies, Osnabrück University using the e-mail address kaththeol@uni-osnabrueck.de to arrive by 31st January 2022 .
