Assistant Professor (m/f/d) (W 1 tenure track W 2 salary level) of
Sociology of Europe and Globalization

as a limited-tenure civil servant to be filled as of the summer semester 2021 (April 1, 2021).Following a positive evaluation conducted at the University of Bamberg after six years’ time, the successful candidate’s position will be commuted to a fully tenured W 2 professorship without a public call for addi­tional applications.

The holder of the position should represent the subject of sociology in research and teaching. Internationally visible publications and a clear research profile in the subject area of the assistant professorship (European sociology, globalization, transnationalization, international political sociology) with relevant theoretical knowledge are expected. Furthermore, broad methodological skills are re-quested, particularly in the field of comparative macro sociology. First experience in third-party funding is desirable.

The teaching repertoire and teaching experience of the searched candidate should be based on the study focus "European and Global Studies" in the BA and MA in Sociology. In addition, the willingness to participate in the further development of the internationalization of teaching is expected. Participation in structured doctoral training within the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS) is also welcome.

The holder of the position is expected to contribute in ongoing programs, especially the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes and participate in the development of new curricula. In addition, the successful candidate is also expected to be involved in contributing towards the internationalisation of the Faculty’s course offering, to support its international cooperation and exchange programmes and take on duties in the area of academic self-government. The ability to teach in a foreign language (preferably English) and a willingness to engage in the development of academic training programmes would be most welcome.

The relevant qualifications consist of a completed academic degree, pedagogical aptitude and a particular talent for academic work generally substantiated by the outstanding quality of the candidate’s doctoral degree. Applicants for the tenure track professorship who have got their doctoral degree at the University of Bamberg should have changed universities after completing their doctorate or should have done research outside of the University of Bamberg for at least two years.

The prerequisites for the appointment result from Art. 14 Bavarian Higher Education Act (BayHSchPG). An employment as a research assistant in Germany before or after the doctorate, the doctoral studies and employment phases should not have been more than six years together. These times can be extended under the conditions of Art. 14 Clause 4 BayHSchPG.

This tenure-track professorship is sponsored by the German Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Program. The aim of this program is to make the path to a professorship more predictable and transparent for researchers with a doctorate in an early career phase.

With that said, young scientists are particularly encouraged to apply whose doctoral degree is only relatively short before the desired date of appointment.

The selection process shall be conducted according to the provisions of the Bayerisches Hochschulpersonalgesetz (Bavarian Higher Education Employment Act) concerning the appointment of professors and assistant professors (Art. 18) as well as the rules of the Otto Friedrich University Bamberg for regulating the procedure regarding flexible appeal options. If the general employment requirements are met, the selected candidate will be employed as a limited-tenure civil servant for an initial period of three years. Following a positive evaluation, a further three-year extension is intended.
