Assistant Professorship (W2, Tenure Track) Biomedical Engineering

Within the strategic alliance of the Rhein-Main-Universitäten (https://www.rhein-main-universitaeten.de/en), an interdisciplinary and university-wide focus area for Biomedical Engineering is being established. As part of this process, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of Technische Universität Darmstadt comprehensively consolidates and expands its research and teaching activities in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

The focus area is established through three new professorships (one W3 professorship and two W2 assistant professorships with tenure track), of which two have already been filled in 2021. With the participation of those, a further thematically connected W2 assistant professorship with tenure track will be set up now. Within this framework, an

Assistant Professorship (W2, Tenure Track) Biomedical Engineering

is to be filled at the earliest possible date. The professorship is independent and free of instructions in its subjects and leads an independent unit within the Department.

The professorship is expected to actively support the establishment of an interdisciplinary, university-wide and internationally visible research program in Biomedical Engineering. Further, it shall contribute to teaching in the master´s program starting in the winter semester of 2021/22. Teaching in the bachelor´s program is desired. For example, participation in the mechanics module in the bachelor´s program would be possible.

The research and teaching focus of the new professorship will be the development of innovative medical device concepts and instruments. These shall complement the existing competencies of the department and foster interdisciplinary cooperation within the Rhein-Main-Verbund, especially the medical departments of the Frankfurt and Mainz universities.

We are looking for postdoc researchers with an excellent reputation in at least one of the following scientific areas:

  • Technologies for regenerative medicine (e.g. tissue engineering, organ-on-chip technology, artificial organs, bio-hybrid implants)
  • Mechatronic systems in medical engineering (e.g. prosthetics, endoscopy, bioMEMS, microrobotics, nanorobotics, medical robotics, smart implants)
  • New analytical technologies for biomedical engineering (e.g. for point-of-care diagnostics and/or laboratory medicine, lab-on-chip technology, concepts for biosensors, microscopy)
  • Bioelectronics/electronic systems in biomedical engineering (e.g. neurosensorics, neuroelectronics, brain-computer-interfaces, flexible electronics, neurostimulation, optogenetic neuroprosthetics, optoelectronic systems, low power/wireless wearable/implantable devices)

A core expertise in the field of electrical engineering and information technology and the ability to cooperate with specialists in the biomedical field and related disciplines is expected. This should be clearly addressed in the research and teaching program enclosed with the application. Especially, possible cooperation within the TU Darmstadt and with the two colleagues in biomedical engineering should be pointed out here. Applicants are invited to outline the potential of their research for the development of novel biomedical technology and the relevance of their research topics for the establishment of a focal area Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in the framework of Rhine-Main universities as well as map out intended teaching and research activities.

Applicants must have successfully completed a university degree, excellent doctoral degree and should be able to present further independent and innovative contributions to research and teaching in at least one of the above-mentioned areas. A clear international and interdisciplinary orientation should be evident from their scientific profile.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to § 64 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz); it is initially financed as part of a joint federal and state program for the promotion of junior researchers (www.tenuretrack.de), whose regulations it also adheres to. Accordingly, the maximum period of scientific activities after the PhD degree should not exceed four years.

Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. The position is initially limited to six years. The position comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching.
