at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

This is a tenure-track professorship for a five-year term leading to a tenured W2 position. The position is funded by the Tenure Track Program of the German federal and state governments. This call for applications is therefore particularly targeted at early career researchers. The funding conditions of the position require it to be filled by May 31, 2023, at the latest. We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of plastics materials and processes for a circular economy, to be filled as soon as possible. Target of the new professorship is to create the scientific basis for the transformation of the plastics sector from a linear to a circular economy in order to generate a new level of sustainability. This requires a systemic approach, which essentially establishes recycling as a fundamental target in the development of product and processing technology. The field of research includes aspects like design for recycling and recycling friendly material modification and additivation as well as recycling processes and the processing of recycled plastics having spreading properties. RWTH provides a number of connecting points for interdisciplinary research in this field and the candidate is expected to foster collaboration within RWTH and beyond. The professorship is associated with the IKV – Institute for Plastics Processing – and should complement its pre-existing competence. Candidates provide a recognised expertise preferably in chemical process engineering or chemical engineering with particular focus on plastics recycling.

The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research ex-perience, such as a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent German is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.

Besides excellent research the development of appropriate teaching programs is required. Thus, we expect proven success in third-party funded research as well as enjoyment in teaching. Interest in interdisciplinary research, pronounced commitment to cooperation and strong communication skills complete your profile.
