Junior Professor of Physical Geography - Earth System Modelling

The Institute of Geography at the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences invites appli-cations for the position of

Junior Professor of Physical Geography - Earth System Modelling

beginning on 01.04.2023.

Salary grade W 1 LBesG with tenure track to W 2 | Civil servant with a fixed-term contract

Tasks and expectations:

We are looking for a scientist (m/f/d) at an early career stage whose research and teaching has a designated focus on climate and earth system modelling at the interface between observational and proxy data collections. Additional consideration of human-environment interactions at different spatial and temporal scales is a desired focus of future research of the new professorship. Both (pre-)historical and current objectives relating to climate and environmental change should be included. The suc-cessful candidate is expected to build strong networking within the institute, especially in Physical Geography and the Institute for Atmospheric Physics, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. Due to their research ori-entation, the existing professorships provide support for this vacant professorship by directly contributing data and networking points. The aim is to establish a working group and further develop its own profile, which strengthens the research focus of geography and complementary subjects and actively participates in research networks and initiatives. International experience as well as experience in teaching and in the supervision of these are an advantage. We expect a publication record com-mensurate with career stage.

Participation in academic self-administration is expected. We are looking for candidates who are still at the beginning of their career and have the potential to develop, in the course of the W1 professorship, the skills to assume a permanent W2 professorship.

Requirements:

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in Section 54 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university. A cooperative, teamoriented and proactive work attitude, strong communication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines  is also expected.

Junior professors with tenure track are initially appointed as civil servants for a period of six years. After this period, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (W 2), provided the holder of the position meets the relevant regulations of higher education law (final evaluation procedure) as well as the general requirements according to public services law. In the fourth year, the junior profes-sor’s performance level will be evaluated to provide orientation.

The professorship is financed through the Tenure Track Program of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. Researchers early in their career are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

What we have to offer:

JGU firmly supports making family and career compatible and promotes its employees’ further professional development with an extensive human resources development offer.

As a place of diversity, JGU welcomes qualified applications from people with varied backgrounds.

JGU aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and therefore encourages female re-searchers to apply.

Candidates with severe disabilities and appropriate qual-ifications will be given priority.

Please submit your application, including CV, references, diplomas and certificates, as well as publications, (independent) third-party funds, a research concept, proofs of teaching and the completed application form (to be downloaded at http://www.fb09.uni-mainz.de/open-positions) by 01.06.2022 electronically as one PDF file to the
