Junior Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology with a Focus on Social Belonging (pay grade: W1) with Tenure Track to W3

to commence on 1 October 2022 (minimum salary per month: 4,844 euros) as a fixed-term civil servant position. This tenure track professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.

We are looking for a junior researcher with the ability to work independently and with a high potential for development. Experience in teaching and research as well as research experience with innovative research approaches after the doctorate are required. These should be complementary to existing subject areas covered by Bayreuth’s Social and Cultural Anthropology Department and could further develop the current focus areas of the Chair of Social Anthropology. The focus on “Social Belongings” can be demonstrated, for example, in the areas of gender or the body through studies on sexuality, disability, queerness, ageing, or relationships of closeness and care, but also with reference to questions of (state) citizenship, violence, or intersectional approaches in relation to gender and the body.

The postholder should link to the University of Bayreuth’s research foci on Africa as well as on cultural encounters and transcultural processes and he*she should contribute to the University’s internationalisation strategy. He*She will further develop Social and Cultural Anthropology with its manifold interconnections and engage in the cooperative research programmes of the University of Bayreuth.

Teaching responsibilities will be in the bachelor’s programmes “Social and Cultural Anthropology”, “Culture and Society in Africa”, “Culture and Society” as well as in the master’s programmes “Cultural and Social Anthropology” and “Culture and Society in Africa”.

The ability to teach in English is expected.
