Junior Professorship in Modern German Literary Studies/Literature Didactics

The Department of German of Faculty 05 – Philosophy and Philology –, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, invites qualified persons to apply for a

Junior Professorship in Modern German Literary Studies/Literature Didactics
(W1 fixed-term position with tenure track to a W2 position)

to be taken up at the earliest possible date.

The junior professorship is intended to represent the fields of Modern German Literary Studies and Literary Didactics in a breadth of research appropriate to the career stage as well as in the courses of study "Bachelor of Education" and "Master of Education German" as well as "Bachelor of Arts" and "Master of Arts German Studies" in teaching and, in doing so, to create a particular link between the two subject areas. The professorship will complete the Department of German Language Didactics at the German Institute.

In the field of literary didactics, a focus is expected on literary learning and in modern German literary studies, expertise is expected above all in media studies and media-historical issues (preferably related to 20th and 21st century literature). Another thematic focus may be on reading didactics. Previous research work should form the basis for the deepening of this or the development of further focal points in research and teaching.

The applicant is expected to have completed a relevant university degree and an excellent doctorate in Modern German Literary Studies or Literary Didactics. Applicants should have achieved additional academic achievements in line with their career progress and proven by further academic publications.

Candidates are expected to be able and willing to cooperate intensively with the departments of Modern German Literature and German Didactics and interdisciplinary partners, especially within the JGU and the Rhine-Main-Universities research alliances, which focus on externally funded research projects. Experience in applying for third-party funding, in international professional networking, and in university self-administration is desired.

The job holder should have practical school experience within the meaning of § 49 Para. 3 HochSchG. If this practical school experience is not proven, practical school knowledge must be acquired in the first three years of employment on the basis of a target agreement.

If the applicant’s native language is not German, he or she should provide proof of at least level B2 of the CEFR and be able to teach courses in German within two years. The ability and willingness to teach in English are greatly appreciated.

The professorship is financed by the Joint Federal Government-Länder Programme for Junior Academics. Researchers in the early stages of their careers are therefore especially encouraged to apply. In addition to the general employment requirements, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in section 54 and 55 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act.

Junior professors are initially appointed as civil servants on a fixed-term basis for a period of three years. After a successful interim evaluation, the employment contract is usually extended for another three years. After this period, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (W2), provided the holder of the position meets the relevant regulations of higher education law (evaluation procedure) as well as the general legal requirements.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are advocates of intensive support for students and expect instructors to maintain an active presence at the university. A cooperative and team-oriented work attitude, outstanding communication skills, and the willingness to take on responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is therefore expected.
