Junior professorship (W1) Parallel Systems/Parallel Computing

At the Faculty of Computer Science of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) the following professorship is to be filled as of April 1, 2020:

Junior professorship (W1) with Tenure Track (W2)

Junior professorship (W1) Parallel Systems/Parallel Computing

Tasks: The professorship is intended to establish or strengthen the research of the faculty in the field of Parallel Systems/Parallel Computing. For this purpose, an own, innovative program with connecting points to the research focuses of the Faculty - Image, Interaction and Knowledge - as well as to the overall focuses of the university (e.g. Digital Engineering) is to be developed. The position holder should participate in existing cooperations with non-university research institutions (e.g. Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology, Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation/Automation, Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems).

Teaching takes place in the German and English courses of the Faculty of Computer Science. An active role in the design and profiling of the English-language Master's programs in Digital Engineering and Data and Knowledge Engineering is expected, as is participation in teaching in thematically related programs of other faculties. We attach great importance to the quality of teaching and the participation in the supervision of our students. We expect to participate in the development and testing of new teaching and learning concepts as well as in the further development of the faculty's study programs.

Qualifications: The call for proposals is part of the Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Program for the promotion of young researchers. It is aimed at young scientists with extraordinary potential for a further career in science. The prerequisites for an appointment result from § 40 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. We expect an above-average doctorate in the field of computer science or in a related field.

The applicant shall represent the field of Parallel Systems/Parallel Computing and related technologies in teaching and research. Modern programming concepts (distribution, concurrency and parallelism) and their applications are the focus of the advertised position. The thematic focus of previous research and teaching activities, including internationally recognized publications, should be in several of the following areas:

  • Programming languages and techniques for massively parallel systems
  • GPU programming
  • High-performance computing with massively parallel systems
  • Concurrent systems
  • Formal modeling of parallel systems
  • Multiprocessor and multicore architectures and algorithms
  • Applications of parallel systems, e.g. in the field of big data, simulation, engineering, etc.

Outstanding research achievements are expected to be documented by publications in internationally renowned publications. Experience abroad and/or practical experience in the field of university teaching would be an advantage.

Offer: The professorship is initially limited to three years. Following a positive interim evaluation, an extension for a further three years is planned. If the final evaluation is positive, the position will be transferred to a permanent W2 professorship after six years. Further information can be found at https://www.ovgu.de/Karriere.html.
