Responsibilities:

Duties include establishing a research area within the Medical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry division of the Institute of Pharmacy in the Department of Chemistry.

The successful applicant is expected to have international experience and conduct research in the field of molecular drug discovery. A particular focus is to be given to the development of small molecule drugs with potential anti-infective effects. The expertise of the future post holder should be in the fields of drug design or drug synthesis or in research into structure-effect relationships. Work should preferably contribute to the Universität Hamburg core research area of Infection Research

Participation in the Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology division of the Department of Chemistry is expressly sought. Research should also contribute to creating linkages within the Department of Chemistry as well as with the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Science and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Connections to other external research institutions based in the Hamburg region—such as DESY, Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Centre for Structural Systems Biology, the Heinrich Pette Institute (Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology), or the Borstel Research Center—are desired.

The successful candidate is expected to take part in the University’s core research area Infection Research.

The successful candidate is further expected to participate actively in the instruction of students at undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes holding lectures, practical courses, and seminars as well as supervising final theses for the degree programs offered by the Department of Chemistry.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 18 HmbHG.

Additional Criteria:

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects.

The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives. Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.

Junior professors have academic autonomy in their research and teaching. Applicants’ subject interests are expected to relate to the biochemistry research groups based on campusto create synergies in research and teaching.

A tenure-track evaluation will be conducted during the second phase of the junior professorship in order to determine whether requirements for appointment to a W2 professorship have been met. Section 15 HmbHG applies. If the evaluation is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured W2 professorship. The regulations prohibiting internal appointments also apply to this junior professorship.
