“Experimental Radiation Oncology”

(initially limited to 6 years, with tenure track to W2)

The teaching obligation is governed by the Ordinance on Teaching Obligations at the Berlin Higher Education Institutions (LVVO).

The professorship is funded by the Joint Federal Government–States Funding Programme for Junior Academics (the Tenure-Track Programme). The call for applications is accordingly directed at academics in the first few years after their doctorate. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. The aim is to achieve a proportion of fifty percent women among those awarded tenure-track professorships funded by the program.

The professorship is in principle endowed with a tenure track and is initially limited to six years. In the penultimate year of the tenure-track phase, following a successful tenure evaluation and given the formal requirements for employment are met, the incumbent will be transferred to a lifetime associate (W2) professorship, in accordance with § 102c of the Berlin Higher Education Act. Procedures, processes and performance criteria are set out in the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin’s statute governing tenure-track professorships.

In particular, the professorship is expected to contribute to the research strategy on biologically-individualized precision radiation oncology with a focus on molecular mechanisms of radiation resistance and how to overcome them, biomarkers for individualized radiation oncology, and development of novel adaptive therapeutic approaches.

Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with expertise in preclinical methods for translational patient-oriented biological radiation research, including the use of complex predictive ex vivo models, blood and tissue samples, whose research accomplishments are evidenced by initial relevant publications in inter- and nationally leading journals, as well as other scientific accomplishments appropriate to the early career stage.

• The successful candidate will be responsible for research and teaching as well as academic self-government in the field of “Experimental Radiation Oncology”. Clinical work will be possible with appropriate qualifications.
• The successful candidate for the professorship for “Experimental Radiation Oncology” is expected to strengthen the core research area of “Precision Radiation Oncology/Comprehensive Precision Oncology” and to provide a forward-looking profile in this field. Close scientific interaction with clinicians is desired in order to translate developed methods into improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In addition, experience in cooperation with national and inter­national networks such as DKTK or NCT as well as in the application of methods of digital data-driven precision oncology is desired.
• It is expected that the successful candidate will participate in university teaching, the willingness to actively contribute to the design of the New Revised Medical curriculum in medicine or other degree courses and the supervision of master and/or doctoral students.
• It is desired that the successful candidate will participate in relevant core research areas, research alliances and cross-faculty research networks/research training groups of the Charité, as well as establish and advance collaborations with other entities beyond the Charité.

Formal requirements as per § 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act are a successfully completed university degree in human medicine or natural or life sciences, or a comparable subject, and an outstanding doctorate, as well as a particular talent for academic work and an aptitude for teaching.
