Tenure Track Assistant Professorship (W 1 – tenure W 2) for “School Socialization Research”

"Research and Study with a Prospect"

The University of Wuppertal is a modern, dynamic and research-oriented campus university with an interdisciplinary profile in research and teaching. Together, more than 25,000 researchers, teachers and students face the challenges of society, culture, education, economics, technology, nature and the environment.

The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a

Tenure Track Assistant Professorship (W 1 – tenure W 2) for “School Socialization Research”
(legal basis: W 1 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW).

The position will be based in the Institute of Educational Research within the School of Education. It is to be taken up by 1st of October, 2020.

The Institute of Educational Research focuses on empirical educational research with special emphasis on schools and classroom instruction. In teaching, the institute is responsible for the educational sciences in all teacher training programmes and for special education (special educational needs in learning and emotional-social development).

Expectations:
We are seeking to appoint a person whose research interests target the socialisation of children and/or adolescents in the context of individual schools or the school system. Examples of relevant research issues include the development of societal participation or the significance of peer relationships for the development of personality. We expect an interdisciplinary approach to research as well as empirical research – either qualitative or quantitative. Future research activities should align with a quantitative-empirical orientation as commonly used in the Institute of Educational Research. Successful candidates are expected to develop an international research profile and, in particular, to publish in international journals with a review system. Likewise, the acquisition of own external project funding and the participation in research projects of the Institute should be pursued. Teaching will have to be provided in both, the Bachelor's as well as the Master's degree programmes in teacher training (educational sciences and special education). The University’s human resources department supports the successful candidate’s professional and personal development, including career counseling, acquisition of research funds, teaching excellence and personnel management.

The University considers gender equality as an important task, and the successful candidate will contribute to its implementation.

Requirements:

  • A university degree, e.g. in educational science, special education, teacher education, psychology or sociology.
  • An exceptional aptitude for scientific work, usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a respective doctorate
  • A suitability for teaching, which is proven by appropriate prior experience or, exceptionally, is demonstrated during the appointment procedure
  • A record of relevant empirical research and publication activities (in particular articles in peer-reviewed journals)
  • Experience in attracting external funding to support research projects as well as active participation in research programmes (desired)
  • International orientation, e.g. stays abroad, international contacts, international lectures or publications (desired)

Tenure track:
As a rule, junior professors are appointed as temporary civil servants for a period of three years. Their position is extended for a further three years if they have proven themselves in an interim evaluation. Consequent to a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the junior professor will be tenured as an associate professor (W2, permanent position). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement as well as a confirmation of the resources available to the professorship, are an integral part of the appointment agreement between university and candidate.
