Tenure Track Assistant Professorship (W 1 – tenure W 2) for “Theoretical Chemistry”

"Research and Study with a Prospect"

The University of Wuppertal is a modern, dynamic and research-oriented campus university with an interdisciplinary profile in research and teaching. Collectively, more than 25,000 researchers, academic staff and students face the challenges of society, culture, education, economics, technology, nature and the environment.

The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a

Tenure Track Assistant Professorship (W 1 – tenure W 2) for “Theoretical Chemistry”

(legal basis: W 1 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW).

The position will be based in the Department of Chemistry within the School of Mathematics and Natural Science. It is to be taken up by 1st of October, 2020.

This professorship is funded by the “Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses”, a tenure track programme by the German Federal Government in cooperation with the Federal States of Germany.

Expectations:
We are seeking to appoint an excellent scientist in an early career stage to lead and develop research and teaching activities in theoretical chemistry, preferably in high-level electronic structure calculations with possible applications in the studies of small anharmonic systems (e.g., their thermodynamic stability and/or their reaction dynamics and/or method development in this field). The position is embedded in a stimulating, research-oriented environment with the two research clusters ‘Analysis of dynamic processes’ and ‘Functional molecules and materials’. Both clusters are an integral part of the coordinated research efforts of the chemistry unit at the University of Wuppertal and at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mass Spectrometry (ipaMS). Collaboration with the experimentally oriented research groups in these research clusters is expected.
Once tenured, the successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in the field of physical and theoretical chemistry as well as courses in associated degree programs at all levels of university education.

During the period of the junior professorship we expect the candidate to acquire further outstanding academic achievements, to be successful in applying for external research funding and to excel in teaching. The University´s human resources department supports the successful candidate´s professional and personal development, including career counseling, acquisition of research funds, teaching excellence and personnel management.

Requirements:

  • A university degree in chemistry
  • An exceptional aptitude for scientific work, typically demonstrated by the quality of a respective doctorate
  • A suitability for teaching, which is proven by appropriate prior experience or, exceptionally, is demonstrated during the appointment procedure
  • A record of relevant research and publication activities (in particular articles in peer-reviewed journals)
  • Experience in in the acquisition of/participation in research projects
  • International orientation (e.g. stays abroad, international contacts, international lectures or publications)

The University considers gender equality as an important task, and the successful candidate will contribute to its implementation.

Tenure track:
As a rule, junior professors are appointed as temporary civil servants for a period of three years. Their position is extended for a further three years if they have proven themselves in an interim evaluation. Consequent to a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the junior professor will be tenured as an associate professor (W2, permanent position). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement as well as a confirmation of the resources available to the professorship are an integral part of the appointment agreement between university and candidate.
