tenure track professorship, remuneration group W1, fixed term, to be continued as a lifetime professorship, remuneration group W3
in " Cyber-Physical Systems in Mechanical Engineering”.

This professorship should be seen in the context of Technische Universität Berlin’s goal to recruit and advance junior scholars in the early stage of their career. The tenure track professorship is initially limited to three years. The position shall be renewed for a further three years conditional upon the postholder’s performance and agreement. After six years, as a rule, a lifelong professorship will be offered conditional upon the fulfillment of the determined evaluation criteria and hiring requirements for a lifelong professorship. Working field: The professorship is intended to act as a bridge between the disciplines of computer science, cybernetics and mechanical engineering for the research of cyber-physical systems in mechanical engineering and in this way to provide sustainable impulses for excellent research and teaching at TU Berlin. The postholder is expected to investigate novel methods for the design of cyber-physical systems on the basis of valid models, taking into account their complex properties, and to exploit potential areas of application for such systems. The following areas have been defined for teaching and research:

  • Method development for the early assessment, validation and verification of cyber-physical systems;
  • novel and comprehensive modeling for the description of the systems and their properties;
  • research into methods for the analysis and control of complex machine networks, for instance, in industrial production processes or for traffic coordination;
  • development of methods of adaptivity and machine learning in complex machine networks.

The teaching responsibilities associated with this post relate to the bachelor’s and master’s programs in the engineering sciences. The development of curricula, as well as participation in collaborative research and academic self-administration are further requirements of the position.

Requirements: Essential qualifications: Candidates must fulfill the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 102c Berlin State Higher Education Act in combination with Section 102a Berlin State Higher Education Act. Of particular importance are a university degree in engineering or natural sciences (preferably in mechanical engineering, computer engineering, technophysics or technomathematics), a strong aptitude for research demonstrated, as a rule, by an outstanding doctorate as well as teaching skills demonstrated by a teaching portfolio (for further information about the portfolio, see Technische Universität Berlin’s website, quick access 144242). The candidate is expected to have written publications for peer-reviewed journals – especially leading international journals – in the specialist field. Experience in the acquisition of competitive third-party funding, involvement in international research and project work in the above-mentioned fields are preferred. Also sought are qualifications in the field of science and research management or professional experience in the industrial environment of mechanical engineering, preferably with management responsibilities and with proven expertise in the field of cyber-physical systems. Skills in the area of gender and diversity, as well as commitment to science communication and knowledge and/or technology transfer complete your profile. Non-German speaking applicants are expected to demonstrate a commitment to learning German quickly. Excellent English skills are desirable.
