The following position is to be filled at the Institute for Materials Technology of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the earliest possible date:

W 1 Professorship (m/f/o) for "Extreme light for material structures"

Closes: 02.09.2021

Date of Hire: as soon as possible

Tasks:
Extremely short laser pulses down to the femtosecond range can be used to create structures on surfaces of and in materials on the micro- and nanometer scale. Using suitable process gases, materials can also be chemically modified and thus functionalised during laser processing. The new professorship is intended to establish a cooperation between the Institute of Materials Technology and the Institute of Physics at the University of Kassel. The femtosecond materials processing platform available at the Institute of Physics for functionalising materials and their surfaces will be co-operated and its use will be expanded using pulse shaping techniques. In addition, the Institute of Materials Technology has the necessary equipment for materials characterisation, which is also to be used.

The applicant is expected to contribute to research and teaching at national and international levels. The successful candidate will offer courses on material science topics in the Bachelor/Master programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In addition, he or she should be willing to become involved in the self-administration of the faculty.

Very important is the willingness to engage in the further development of internationalization as well as in the strengthening of existing and the establishment of new research collaborations. In particular, a close cooperation is expected between the position holder and the W1 - Professorship “Granularity of structural information in materials engineering” (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), the W1- Professorship “Theoretical Nanochemistry / Computational Nanochemistry” (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and the W2 - Professorship “ Mechanical Behaviour of Materials "(Faculty of Mechanical Engineering).

Requirements:
Applicants must have a PhD (with a grade of “very good” or better) and provide evidence of in-depth experiences in the field of materials processing using lasers - in particular using femtosecond technologies - and in materials technology. This should be proven by an adequate number of peer-reviewed publications, preferably in high-ranking journals, and successful participation in research projects. First experiences in the independent acquisition of third-party funds are desired. Previous activities should demonstrate the capability for interdisciplinary cooperation and didactic-methodical competences.

The employment and performance requirements apply pursuant to §§ 61, 64 (3) of the Higher Education Act of Hessen (“Qualifikationsprofessur mit Entwicklungszusage”). The fixed-term position is limited to a period of six years in accordance with §64(3) of the Higher Education Act of Hessen (“Qualifikationsprofessur mit Entwicklungszusage”). Upon positive tenure evaluation, a permanent W2 professorship will be conferred. This tenure-track professorship is funded by the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Program.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
