The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) invites applications for the position of a

W1 Professorship in Criminal Law
(Tenure Track with possibility of advancement to W 3)

The Chair is funded by the Programme of the Federal and State Governments for the Assistance of Young Academics (Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuch­ses) (Tenure Track Programme) and will be located within the Law Faculty, starting Winter Se­mester 2020/21.

The appointment is initially on a fixed term of 3 to 4 years and if evaluation is favourable, will be renewed on a regular basis for up to a maximum of six years. The concluding Tenure Track evaluation for permanent professorship will commence no later than nine months before the end of the second phase of the Junior Professorship. The Rules for the Evaluation of Junior Profes­sors and Tenure Track Professors as at 11.12.2018 (AmBek No. 1/2019, p.1, https://www.europa-uni.de/de/struktur/verwaltung/dezernat_2/amtliche_bekanntmachungen/ab-2019/AmBek-1-2019.pdf) regulate the procedure, and contain the criteria and policies which form the basis for recruitment.

The incumbent is expected to represent the field of criminal law and the law of criminal proce-dure in research and teaching. The faculty places high priority on a distinguished academic pro-file in the core area of criminal law and criminal procedure law as well as the willingness to con-tribute to undergraduate teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the research profile of the Faculty of Law of the Europa-Universität. Thus, we place particular emphasis in the candidate’s profile on:

  • a recognizable approach in the development of a second research focus in at least one of the secondary areas of criminal law (in particular juvenile criminal law, criminology, media criminal law, sanctions and penitentiary law, criminal tax law or commercial criminal law),
  • contributing to the criminal focus area (Schwerpunktbereich),
  • contributing to undergraduate teaching,
  • willingness to interdisciplinary cooperation
  • interest in cooperating with Central and Eastern European colleagues, especially the AMU Poznan.

The announcement is especially aimed at postdoctoral researchers in the first years after confer-ral of the doctorate.

Requirements 
The general requirements before a candidate can be appointed are set out in parag. 45 of the Brandenburg Law on Higher Education (BbgHG). Applicants who obtained their Doctorate from the European University Viadrina and/or are employed by the University are also referred to parag. 11 of the University’s Rules on the Appointment of Professors. Where, after obtaining the Doctorate, an applicant has worked as an Akademische Mitarbeiterin / Akademischer Mitarbeiter (junior lecturer) at a German University, the periods of full-time employment in university or other academic research between the date of last examination for the doctorate and the date of this job application should together not exceed six years. Circumstances under which an extension of this period is possible can be found under parag. 45 (2) BbgHG.
