The Institute of Medical Informatics and Statistics (IMIS) at the Kiel University Medical Faculty invites applications for the following position to be filled as soon as possible:
The successful applicant will not only participate in research and teaching in the field of Medical Informatics but is also expected to play an active role in the new faculty focus on “Integrated Systems Medicine”, closely linking the two research areas of inflammation and neurosciences.
To facilitate internationally competitive medical research, the Kiel University Medical Faculty draws upon clinical, laboratory and image data generated in a clinical care context at University Hospital-Schleswig Holstein (UKSH). In addition, the Kiel University Medical Faculty is involved in various collaborative research projects that generate comprehensive multidimensional data resources, particular from genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics studies. Together with other external partners, CAU has established the DFG Cluster of Excellence “Inflammation at Interfaces”, a multifaceted research network for the interdisciplinary study of inflammatory diseases of barrier organs. In addition, the local “PopGen” biobank holds data and biomaterial from more than 80,000 individuals that have been used extensively in local, national and international research collaborations in the past. Kiel is also the local site of the “National Cohort”, a large-scale epidemiological project initiated by the Helmholtz Society that has been operated successfully in Kiel for over two years.
The Kiel University Medical Faculty has successfully applied for funding from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) under their call “Förderkonzept Medizininformatik”. The BMBF programme aims at improving the interoperability of research and clinical data resources at German university hospital and at the same time supports the development of means to efficiently exploit these resources to the benefit of both patient care and research. The successful candidate is expected to become involved in the planning and implementation of the Kiel contribution to these endeavours. Moreover, the BMBF will support newly appointed professors in the field through funding junior research groups (“Nachwuchsgruppen”). The successful candidate is expected to actively support an application for such funding by the Kiel University Medical Faculty.
The position of W2 Professor for Medical Informatics shall be filled by an exceptional expert in medical informatics with a strong background in medicine and/or the natural or engineering sciences. The successful candidate will join the newly established Section “Medical Informatics” of UKSH, embedded in the IMIS. They are expected to conduct and expand ongoing work on large-scale data integration in a clinical care context. The successful candidate should take part in curricular teaching in medicine and in the Kiel master programs “Medical Life Sciences” (ongoing) and “Computational Biomedicine” (in preparation).
Applicants must have the formal qualifications listed in § 61 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein (HSG). The Tenure Track option allows the advertised position to be made permanent upon successful evaluation. In accord with its statutory obligations, Kiel University will initiate a corresponding process usually one year before expiry of the contract.
