Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for
W1 professorships are to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a W2 professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.
We seek to appoint top early career scholars who will develop outstanding expertise in the field. The professorships are financed with funds from a Federal and State programme for supporting young researchers at German universities. All professorships are intended to make significant contributions to the FAU key research priorities. This call for applications addresses outstanding early career scholars with the ambition of developing their own profiles and careers as part of the strategic development of a key priority in cooperation with renowned scholars at FAU (‘Open Topic Tenure Track’). The two positions announced in this call for applications will strengthen research and teaching in the field of ‘Translational Health Research’. The successful candidates will be invited to take an active role in the FAU key research priority ‘Medicine, Life Sciences and Health’. Both professorships will be assigned to the Faculty of Medicine and work closely with Universitätsklinikum Erlangen.
The W1 professorship for rare kidney diseases addresses candidates who are prepared for a significant role in research, teaching and patient care in this field. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in medicine and should demonstrate willingness to collaborate in research initiatives in Erlangen and at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research. The professor will be expected to make a significant contribution to research and teaching in the area of ‘Translational Health Research’ through internationally-visible research in the field of nephrology focusing on rare kidney diseases. Clinical experience in nephrology and experience in raising third party funding are also desired.
An additional W1 professorship will focus on translational neurosciences. It particularly addresses candidates who are already visible on an international level in research and teaching in the field of translational neurosciences. Participation in patient care is possible subject to the respective qualifications. Applicants must hold a degree in natural science (e.g. molecular medicine) or a degree in medicine. Close collaboration with the Bavarian Research Association Interaction of Human Brain Cells (ForInter) and DFG Research Training Group 2162 ‘Neurodevelopment and Vulnerability of the Central Nervous System’ is desired. The position involves modelling diseases of the central nervous system with particular emphasis on developing innovative therapeutic intervention strategies. In addition, expertise in stem cell biology is of particular interest, as well as experience in the competitive acquisition of third party funding.
A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are also prerequisites. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic publications. You may also have acquired the necessary qualifications in a non-university context.
FAU expects applicants to become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in German are desired.
