Computer Science with a focus on Data Science (Reference W1861) W1 to W2

As part of the career development programme for junior researchers funded by the German federal and state governments, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is inviting applications for the following tenure-track junior professorship:

Computer Science with a focus on Data Science (Reference W1861)

This position will initially be a fixed-term public sector position (‘Beamtenverhält­nis auf Zeit’) for a period of up to four years. The duration of the appointment may be extended up to a maximum of six years in total if this is supported by the results of the teaching appraisal and the external assessment of the appointee’s research work. If performance continues to meet the required standards and if the tenure evaluation procedure is positive, the junior professor (at the German academic salary scale W1) will be promoted to a permanent professorship (life-time tenure) at the German academic salary scale W2. The appointment will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law.

The successful candidate will demonstrate research excellence and a strong commitment to teaching in Computer Science with a focus on Data Science. We are seeking to appoint an individual who has already made important, internationally visible contributions to the field. We welcome applications from candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas of research:

  • Data Science for Systems and Systems for Data Science
  • Data Wrangling, Profiling, Cleaning, and Visualization
  • Big Data Engineering and Analytics, Databases, Query Processing
  • Data, Text, and Web Mining
  • Pattern Mining and Recognition
  • Machine Learning
  • Any other modern topic in Data Science

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate openness towards collaboration with other Data Science users within Saarland University, in particular in the areas of Medicine, Biomedicine and Natural Sciences but also other areas at Saarland University including Material Sciences and Humanities.

Active participation in research and teaching, particularly the core curriculum of the new Bachelor’s and Master’s programme ‘Data Science and Artificial Intelligence’ is required. Courses will be held in English or alternatively in German for the Bachelor’s programme. The successful candidate will be responsible for acquiring third-party funding independently and for establishing collaborative projects and develop core research in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland University.

The Department of Computer Science at Saarland University combines outstanding teaching with excellence in research and technology transfer and is regularly listed at the top of important rankings. The Department works closely with both Max Planck Institutes for Informatics and for Software Systems, the Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA) and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, the Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science, the research unit Multimodal Computing and the Center for Bioinformatics which are all located on the campus.

Candidates must be university graduates with experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching, who have shown a particular capacity for independent academic research, generally through the outstanding quality of their PhD or doctorate.
