Professorship in Theoretical Physics (W1 with tenure track to W2)

The Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Cologne is seeking applications for a

Professorship in Theoretical Physics
(W1 with tenure track to W2)

This call is part of the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. It addresses researchers at an early career stage.

The professorship is established at the interface between the physics of gravitation/holography and quantum information, condensed matter or cosmology. Applications should demonstrate experience in a combination of these areas, and openness to research transcending the boundaries between fields.

The institute is engaged in various collaborative research initiatives, notably CRC183 “Entangled States of Matter” and the Cluster of Excellence “Matter and Light for Quantum Information” (ML4Q), and prospective collaboration in these projects is encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of the standard curriculum of theoretical physics, in particular that of general relativity.

Qualification requirements are in accordance with the North Rhine-Westphalia University Law and include an excellent track record in research and teaching.

In the third year after entering into office, an interim evaluation is held. This serves as the basis for the decision as to whether an extension for a further three years will be granted to the candidate. At the latest, a final evaluation is held in the sixth year after entering into office. On this basis, a decision will be reached as to whether the candidate will be given tenure at W2 level. Both evaluations are carried out according the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne. W1 professorships comprise a teaching load of four hours per week (i.e., two 90-minute courses per semester) in the first qualification phase and five hours per week in the second qualification phase. W2 professorships comprise a teaching load of nine semester hours per week.

The University of Cologne is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Women are expressly encouraged to apply and given priority in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome applications from people with special needs or of equal status.

Applicants should send a CV, proof of qualification, lists of publications and teaching statement, a concise summary of research interests and highlight five selected publications via the Academic Job Portal of the University of Cologne (https://professorships.uni-koeln.de) by February 2, 2020 to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Cologne, Albertus-Magnus-Platz, 50923 Cologne.
