Personalities with excellent scientific and didactic skills are invited to apply.  The appointment is initially for three years. After an interim orienting advisory review, the appointment will be extended for another three years. Pending on a positive performance evaluation after a maximum of six years, the appointment will become tenured with a lifetime civil-service position (W2).

The position is associated to the Institute of Solid State Physics which has a strong research focus in the field of synthesis, characterization and application of new semiconductor materials and optically active semiconductor micro- and nanostructures.

We are looking for a leading candidate with advanced research activity in the field of modern time-resolved solid state spectroscopy. Possible research areas are optical spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures (in particular wide bandgap semiconductors) and nanoscale materials, two-dimensional materials, or strongly correlated systems. Activities for the development of new spectroscopic methods, e.g. to study the interaction of solid surface with the environment are appreciated.

The collaboration with the research groups at the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics and the Bremen Center for Computational Material Science (BCCMS) are expected.

The Institute of Solid State Physics and the associated research groups offer a wide spectrum of experimental techniques for the synthesis of different material systems, processing of micro-, nanostructures and devices, structural characterization by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction as well for the analysis of surfaces and interfaces.

The prerequisites for employment are the completion of a relevant course of study, primarily in physics, and a relevant doctorate as well as further high-quality scientific achievements. Pedagogical aptitude and the ability to teach the full range of experimental physics as a major and minor subject are required. Willingness to offer courses in English and German are expected. Junior professors are relieved of a proportion of the teaching load at the beginning of their activities in order to be able to distinguish themselves scientifically.

The University of Bremen offers an ideal academic environment for the establishment of disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration. The position holder is expected to engage in internationalization and international networking. Willingness and ability to acquire third-party research is expected. Non-German-speaking applicants should be prepared to learn the language and teach in German after two to three years.

The appointment follows the regulations of § 18a BremHG as well as § 117 BremBG. Candidates holding a PhD degree from the University of Bremen may only apply if they are no longer employed at the University or if they had been employed outside of the University of Bremen for at least two years.
