W1-Tenure-Track-Professorship (Tenure-Track to W2) for Media Philosophy and Phi-losophy of Technology with special consideration for Theory of Contemporary Art (m, f, d).

To be filled at the earliest possible date. If the requirements specified by civil service law are met, the appointment will be as a civil servant with limited tenure for the duration of three years. Subject to a positive evaluation of the candidate’s professional, pedagogical and personal aptitude, an extension for a further three years is possible. The appointment for the W2-professorship depends entirely upon the outcome of the tenure evaluation. On the basis of a positive tenure evaluation the candidate will be appointed as professor (W2) with civil service status for life.

The goal of the professorship is to anchor the theoretical engagement with technological and media aspects of artistic practices in the teaching syllabus of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. It develops an inter- and transdisciplinary engagement with questions of artistic production, its methods, techniques and media. Besides traditional classroom teaching, the appointee is expected to integrate practical formats such as exhibitions and other col-lective artistic projects into their teaching practice. Drawing on core insights and ap-proaches from the fields of Aesthetics, Media Philosophy and Philosophy of Technology, the appointee should also incorporate gender and queer theory into their research and teaching. It is expected that the candidate has produced outstanding research in the areas of aesthetics, media philosophy and philosophy of technology with specific attention to ar-tistic positions. The special status of philosophy and aesthetics teaching in the study pro-grammes ‘Fine Arts’ and ‘Art Education’ at the Academy of Fine Arts should be taken into consideration.

Responsibilities of the professorship comprise:

  • Teaching independent courses in the field of media philosophy and philosophy of technology as well as aesthetics for the programmes of fine arts and art education;
  • Supervision of theoretical work by students in fine arts and art education;
  • Conducting interdisciplinary research and setting up practical formats with stu-dents;
  • Applying for third-party funding;
  • Participation in academic self-administration, juries, commissions, projects, etc. that take place in the context of the academy.

We are looking for a person with:

  • A completed, outstanding PhD in philosophy with a focus on media philosophy or aesthetics or a PhD in a related discipline that takes an explicitly theoretical ap-proach (cultural studies, media studies, art theory);
  • A research focus on media philosophy and philosophy of technology, contemporary art and aesthetics, contemporary art theory, theories of the digital;
  • Excellent knowledge of contemporary art;
  • The ability to combine media-philosophical work with overarching theoretical, in-terdisciplinary and artistic questions;
  • A proven interest in the theoretical analysis of students’ artistic practices;
  • The ability to offer teaching in German and English if required.
