W2 Professorship (fixed-term for 6 years) with Tenure Track in Marine Geology

Kiel University has successfully applied for funding through the Federal State Program in support of early career researchers, and seeks to appoint more qualified women to professorships.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Kiel University, Germany, invites applications for a

W2 Professorship (fixed-term for 6 years) with Tenure Track in Marine Geology

to be filled as soon as possible at the Institute of Geosciences.

The successful candidate should represent Marine Geology in research and teaching and he/she is expected to foster and further develop the University's research focus 'Kiel Marine Sciences (KMS)'. We are seeking an internationally recognized scientist, who has profound expertise in the field of Marine Geology. Potential key research areas are paleoclimate research, analysis of marine sediment archives e. g. in terms of sediment geochemistry as well as the application and development of paleo proxies to reconstruct past environmental conditions. We are expecting an active engagement in the application and organization of marine seagoing expeditions.

In addition, we expect that the professorship contributes to basic teaching efforts in the existing B. Sc. and M. Sc. curricula at the institute, and as broadly as possible in the area of Marine Geology, including field methods. The teaching duties are based on the latest State Regulations for Universities (LVVO) of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Presently, according to § 4 (1), they comprise 9 hours per term week.

Since the institute's research and education profile focuses thematically on Marine and Applied Geosciences, an active lead in the design and execution of larger interdisciplinary projects in Earth System and Marine Science at the university level, e.g. in collaboration with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and a participation at international ocean drilling projects (IODP) is truly desired. For more detailed information on the position and the Institute of Geosciences you may contact Prof. Dr. Birgit Schneider (birgit.schneider@ifg.uni-kiel.de).

The position is opened with respect of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Due to the tenure track option, the position might be extended towards a permanent tenured W2 position after successful qualification and evaluation. As a rule, the separate tenure evaluation will take place in the last year of the temporary professorship. According to § 62 (2) sentence 4 No. 3 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein especially qualified persons, whose stay at the university is of outstanding interest to foster research quality and profile, can be appointed as W3 from a W2 position. This is particularly valid for exceptionally qualified professors who contribute to the establishment, maintenance or sustained strengthening of one of the research priorities of the university. Further information is available on the CAU homepage at www.berufungen.uni-kiel.de.

Kiel University wishes to increase the number of female scientists in faculty positions and encourages applications of qualified women. Female applicants will be given priority if their qualifications and achievements are equal to those of male applicants. Applications from scientists with disabilities will be given priority in case of equal qualifications. We explicitly encourage candidates with an immigration background to apply. Please also refrain from submitting photographs.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, certificates of academic degrees, list of publications, information on teaching experience, third-party funding and short statements on previous and future research interests, together with private and academic postal and email addresses and telephone numbers. Applications should be submitted in a single pdf document (smaller than 20 MB) by May 07, 2019 to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kiel University, 240 8 Kiel, Germany, (berufungen@mnf.uni-kiel.de).
